Richard P Kratz , M.D.,D.Sci. (Dick) was a legend in international medical ophthalmic circles. Professor at two prestigious USA medical schools Dick was esteemed for his ground-breaking work in intraocular lens implants.
Dick installed intraocular lenses in Robert Young the actor who portrayed Marcus Welby, M.D. on television. At the time this treatment was not recognized and insurance payment was declined. The pair appeared before the USA Congress and were successful in getting the treatment officially recognized and payment made .So you see Dick was a pioneer and a man who stood up and fought for what be believed to be right.
I met Dick in 2001 when he visited me after I helped his wife with a medical problem. He was open-minded and fascinated by my new work. We spent many hours together and he referred members of his family.
Dick was a great friend to my work and his pioneering and courageous spirit was always in evidence. It was not easy for a traditional doctor with his reputation to support work that may be said to challenge the fundamental beliefs of contemporary medicine. I greatly appreciated his support.
Dick passed on February 16th, 2015 and he is greatly missed by all who knew him.
